Job Summary

A Boilerman is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of boilers and associated plant equipment. The primary duties include monitoring boiler systems, performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring compliance with all safety and environmental regulations. The ideal candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence to support continuous plant operations.

Job Responsibilities

1. Operation & Monitoring:

  • Operate, monitor, and control boiler systems, including high-pressure steam boilers, water treatment systems, and auxiliary equipment (pumps, compressors, economizers).
  • Continuously check boiler gauges, meters, and control systems to ensure proper operation (e.g., pressure, temperature, water levels, fuel flow).
  • Maintain accurate log sheets and operational records for parameters, fuel consumption, and chemical treatments.

2. Maintenance & Inspection:

  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on boilers and related equipment according to a scheduled plan.
  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly safety and operational inspections.
  • Assist in annual boiler shutdowns, inspections, and overhauls.
  • Identify and report any mechanical issues or potential hazards.

3. Safety & Compliance:

  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and environmental regulations.
  • Ensure boiler operations comply with local statutory requirements and codes.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to boiler alarms and emergency situations.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area in the boiler room.

4. Troubleshooting & Repair:

  • Diagnose the cause of operational problems and perform minor repairs or adjustments.
  • Coordinate with the maintenance team or external vendors for major repairs.
  • Isolate and prepare equipment for maintenance when required.

5. Water & Chemical Treatment:

  • Test boiler water quality regularly (e.g., pH, conductivity, hardness).
  • Perform blowdown and chemical dosing to maintain proper water chemistry and prevent scale/corrosion.


Job Requirements

1. Mandatory Certification & Legal Compliance

  • Boilerman Grade 1:
    • Must possess a valid "Certificate of Competency as a Boiler Engineer" issued by DOSH (JKKP).
  • Boilerman Grade 2:
    • Must possess a valid "Certificate of Competency as a Boiler Attendant" issued by DOSH (JKKP).
  • Both Grades:
    • Thorough knowledge of and strict adherence to the Factories and Machinery (Steam Boiler and Unfired Pressure Vessel) Regulations 1970 is mandatory.
    • All certificates must be validated with a JKKP Practising Certificate.

2. Education & Experience

  • Boilerman Grade 1:
    • Minimum SPM or equivalent.
    • Typically requires at least 4-5 years of documented experience in operating and maintaining industrial boiler systems, including significant experience in a supervisory role.
    • Proven experience with large, complex boiler plants and high-pressure systems.
  • Boilerman Grade 2:
    • Minimum SPM or equivalent.
    • Requires at least 2-3 years of hands-on experience in operating and maintaining industrial boilers.

3. Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Boilerman Grade 1:
    • Advanced knowledge of boiler plant management, including multiple boilers, complex control systems, and high-pressure steam distribution.
    • Ability to supervise a team of attendants or junior personnel.
    • Strong skills in planning and executing major maintenance, shutdowns, and overhauls.
    • Proficient in advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex system failures.
  • Boilerman Grade 2:
    • Proficient in the daily operation, monitoring, and routine maintenance of boilers.
    • Solid understanding of water treatment, chemical dosing, and blowdown procedures.
    • Ability to perform basic troubleshooting and minor repairs under the guidance of a Grade 1 Engineer.

4. Physical & Personal Attributes (Common to Both)

  • Physically fit to work in high-temperature environments, perform heavy lifting, and work in confined spaces.
  • High level of safety awareness and responsibility.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to work on rotating shifts, public holidays, and be on standby.
